Press release: The Directorate of Culture warns of increased cultural differences, Kloden theater responds with "take from the rich" tickets

February 11, 2026

Kloden In 2024, the theatre launched the Peter Pan and Robin Hood ticket offer. This is a new ticket concept that gives the audience the opportunity to pay according to their own financial ability. The scheme has contributed to more children and young people having access to performing arts experiences at the theatre, regardless of their wallet. A new report from the Directorate of Culture confirms the importance of such an offer.

State of culture
New figures released by the Directorate of Culture on 26 January show that who uses cultural services in Norway is increasingly influenced by income, place of residence and education. In the report Kulturens tildandel 2024, the Directorate of Culture points out that cultural services have in practice become relatively more expensive for most people, and that social differences in cultural consumption appear to be increasing over time. At the same time, private and commercial services in music and performing arts are growing in particular.

– The figures from the Directorate of Culture confirm what we already see in practice: Accessibility cannot be taken for granted, says Ådne Sekkelsten, Artistic Director at Kloden Teater. During the two years we have had Peter Pan and Robin Hood tickets, ticket sales have increased by 27 percent. We sell more Robin Hood tickets at 300 kroner than Peter Pan tickets at 20 kroner. This shows that many people are willing to pay a little more so that others can also go to the theater. With these tickets, we can continue to help open the theater further. Kloden Teater should be a place where more children and young people feel that the performing arts are actually for them, says Sekkelsten.

"Take from the rich"
In the Peter Pan and Robin Hood tickets, the audience can choose the ticket price themselves.

In our offer, those who have the most pay for those who have the least, says Sekkelsten.

– We want performing arts to be a common good and not a privilege reserved for a few. When ticket prices rise faster than wage and price growth, it has real consequences for who can afford to participate. With the Peter Pan and Robin Hood tickets, we are meeting this development with a concrete and inclusive measure.

Children and youth as a core audience
Kloden theatre is a theatre with children and young people as its core audience, which is established in the east of Oslo, at Økern, at the bottom of Groruddalen. From the first day, the theatre has been clear that ticket revenue cannot be a decisive part of its operating basis.
The Peter Pan and Robin Hood ticket scheme is inspired by their partner in Germany, Junges Ensemble Stuttgart, who has offered Peter Pan and Robin Hood tickets for a long time with good results.
