About difficult topics in the performing arts and literature: Welcome to the artist talk and book launch!
Mariko Miyata-Jancey and musician Ibou Cissokho share a short excerpt from Mieko at Dance Camp , a combination of performance and book presentation, as an introduction to tonight's conversation.
Afterwards, invite Artistic Director Ådne Sekkelsten in discussion with Mariko Miyata-Jancey and Guro Sibeko. Together they explore how literature and performing arts can meet, and how art for children can address difficult topics – such as exclusion and racism among children.
The conversation is based on Mariko's project at the intersection of book and stage, and opens up for reflection on how stories can create recognition, empathy and resilience in a young audience.
The bar is open with soup and drinks, and it will be possible to buy the book and have it signed.
Mieko at Dance Camp is a colorful and warm picture book about standing out, jealousy, the joy of dancing and new friendships. The book addresses important themes such as belonging, exclusion and racist statements, with humor, enthusiasm and a big heart.
About Mariko Miyata-Jancey
Mariko (b. 1989) is a Norwegian-Japanese multidisciplinary artist. Her work ranges from children's books to essays, and from children's performances to experimental dance. Throughout her career, she has explored human existence – identity, motherhood and love – by unraveling the complexities of everyday life and drawing lines from the private to the fundamental existential.
Mariko's first book, Mieko Dances (2023), won the Ministry of Culture's award for best picture book and has been translated into five languages.
With a staged reading where she herself reads and dances out the book, she has visited Dansens Hus three times and opened the Literature Festival in Lillehammer. In 2025, she was invited by the Norwegian Embassy in Japan to participate in a literature event at the Nordic Pavilion during the World Expo in Osaka.
Mariko holds a bachelor's degree in modern and contemporary dance with pedagogy, a master's degree in choreography from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, and a master's degree in literature for children and young people from the Norwegian Children's Book Institute. As a choreographer, she works at the intersection of dance and theater.
