Go Figure!: Julia Shapoval with Babusya – Julia Shapoval (UKR)
The event is free, but you must collect a free ticket to be guaranteed a seat.
Come and hear Ukrainian Julia Shapoval talk about the power that art, and in this case a grandmother figure, can have for people under extreme pressure. Shapoval travels to the front lines where she meets fighting soldiers for a chat with “Babusya”, the Ukrainian grandmother figure.
… I meet a very special audience – military. And right now this is the most important stage for me. – Julia Shapoval
Through her work with puppet theater, Shapoval has discovered an unexpected and powerful dimension – how puppets can play a crucial role in psychological support for soldiers. The results are strong and clear. For her, there is a deep sense of meaning in being able to combine what she loves most – art – with volunteer work that has a direct and vital impact.
Like many artists, she has asked herself the question: Do we really need art in a time like this? Her experiences provide a clear answer: Yes. Art is not only relevant – it is necessary.
When she sees young soldiers react, when laughter and tears find space, and a long-awaited redemption occurs, it becomes clear why. That's why Shapoval takes the dolls right up to the front lines.
There, what is otherwise difficult to express can become apparent. Many people find it easier to open up to a doll than to another person. Trust is established more quickly, and that is precisely where the figure's unique power lies:
The doll can reach the soul – and help heal it.
