Oslo's new theater house is taking shape - come in and see!

Kloden The theatre has been officially promoted as a national cultural building, and our new theatre house of over 3,000 square meters is constantly growing in the old cable factory in Kabelgata at the bottom of Groruddalen. This will be the first national cultural institution in Oslo East, and if all goes according to plan, we will open in the first half of 2027.
Our new theatre house will have two stages, four rehearsal rooms, a workshop for performing arts production and a number of flexible spaces. The theatre will be the third place for children and young people, the place between home and school/work. Here there will be space to hang out, create and experience, with workshops, concerts, performances and low-threshold events.

Artistic Director Ådne Sekkelsten describes the house as a climate-conscious reuse project:
We are transforming the old factory into a new theatre, instead of building everything new. And we are doing it in the middle of Norway's largest urban development area. I am very pleased that we can be a climate-conscious reuse project, while at the same time that the history that is already in the walls, mixed with all the new stories that will be told at this theatre in the future, may give the audience an extra dimension that tells about Oslo then and now.
In 2025, over 13,000 visitors visited Kloden theatre. This included around 1,500 participants in workshops, professional events and other activities. When the new building is ready, we plan to quadruple the activity and welcome around 100,000 visitors annually, to performing arts, participation and meeting places for children and young people from all over the city.

What is a national cultural building?
In Norway, the term "national cultural buildings" is often used to refer to large, state-supported cultural venues and museums that have a central function in preserving or communicating Norwegian culture, art and history. The Directorate of Culture and the Ministry of Culture and Equality administer grant schemes for such buildings. Some of the most prominent national cultural buildings in Norway are the National Theatre, the National Museum, the Opera House and the Munch Museum.
