The DNB Savings Bank Foundation provides millions in support to Kloden theater
June 23, 2025
The support is 16.7 million kroner, and will be used to purchase stage equipment and infrastructure in the new theater building. Kloden theater.
– This is fantastic news. Now the last pieces are falling into place before construction starts in the fall. The fact that both the state, municipality and private sector are so wholeheartedly supporting Kloden theatre, means that we can now finally realize a house that can really mean something, both for children and young people, for Oslo and Groruddalen, and for the country's performing arts field, says Artistic Director Ådne Sekkelsten.
Kloden The theatre has previously received significant investment support from both the state and the municipality for the construction. In order for the building to be used as a full-fledged performing arts arena, financing for the stage equipment is also absolutely necessary. The support from Sparebankstiftelsen DNB is a major boost for one of Norway's and Oslo's most ambitious initiatives in performing arts for children and youth, and for the development of a new cultural powerhouse in Groruddalen.
400 percent increase in activity
The Theatre House Kloden The theatre will open its doors to its new building in 2027 in Kabelgata on Økern, becoming the first national cultural institution to ever establish itself in Groruddalen. With two full stages, good open audience areas with a café, several production rooms, a workshop and office facilities, the building will be an important meeting place for children and young people in Oslo, and a significant gathering and production site for the performing arts field.
Today holds Kloden theatre in temporary premises in Kabelgata on Økern. In 2024, 342 performances were shown here, and the theatre collaborated with 59 performing arts companies from all over the country. Now, an increase in activity of 400 percent is planned when the new building is ready.
The new theatre building is part of the larger development of Hovinbyen and Økern, where a large population growth is expected in the coming years. The theatre is strategically located in an area that currently lacks social and cultural infrastructure, and this is precisely what Kloden theater now will be involved in building.
A splicing layer
Kloden The theater was established 10 years ago, and then the search for locations began.
We were keen to establish ourselves where there was not already a widespread arts and cultural offering for children and young people, and a place where theatre could make a difference as a cultural engine in urban development. The fact that we are now ready to build a permanent theatre here in Kabelgata in Økern, in the middle of the largest urban development project in Norwegian history, is a dream come true.
- Ådne Sekkelsten, Artistic Director
Everything is made possible by the support partners, from the state and municipality, and now also from the Savings Bank Foundation.
– What a great team! This is a fantastic gift for children and young people, for the performing arts and for everything Kloden theatre stands for. You couldn't ask for more than this on your 10th anniversary, says Sekkelsten.
