Kloden pilot – first construction phase of Kloden theater

January 31, 2020

Renovation begins in February Kloden Pilot in Kabelgata in Oslo.

Laboratory

The premises at Kabelgata 31 used to be a laboratory for Standard Telefon og kabelfabrikk, where they simulated lightning (!) to see how the cables could withstand it. Now it will soon be a place for artistic experiments and experiences. Today it is an empty warehouse, high under the roof and just over 300 square meters in size. Before it can be used, we need to install ventilation and carpeting, as well as changing rooms, showers and toilets. In addition, we will lay wooden floors on the concrete floor.

Close to street life outside

The listed facade has a large overhead door that makes it easy to transport scenery in and out, and there are windows that create good contact with the street life outside.

From Pilot to theater

We have received a gift from the Savings Bank Foundation for the purchase of sound and lighting equipment and are installing a full lighting rig on the ceiling, as well as an amphitheatre. All of this is sized so that it can be moved from the pilot down to Kloden theater's smallest hall when the next construction phase begins.

Precarious shortage of production and screening facilities

The Oslo Municipality's mapping of cultural infrastructure shows that the performing arts sector stands out with a precarious lack of production and exhibition spaces. We want to do something about this. First with Kloden Pilot, then with Kloden theater where there will be four production rooms.

Open to the public

Kloden in the city center - so fun!

Our festival, Kloden in the city center, will be moved to Kabelgata as soon as the venue is ready. And throughout the year we will have a number of social and cultural events here, for the local community and for students at Kuben yrkesarena, our closest neighbor. We will program screenings of Norwegian and international performances for children and young people, and we will also rent out so that other actors can show their performances here.

In the heart of Hovinbyen

Cable Street, where Kloden Pilot and the future premises of Kloden theatres are located 70 meters apart, will be the social and cultural heart of Hovinbyen. The area is Norway's largest urban development area, and over the next 10 years it is planned that the area will gain 40,000 new residents. In the long term, the district will accommodate 100,000 residents. Being already in place gives us a unique opportunity to build up our offerings in line with the development of the area, constantly in close dialogue with the local community and youth at Kuben.

Kabelgata - a social and cultural street

Kabelgata is already a lively street. Kuben yrkesarena, several art studios, fashion designers and the Historical Museum are doing their bit, and in Kulturtårnet a regular offering of concerts and nightlife is being built up.

Splice on stage floor

Although much is already in place, it is undeniable that building a theater is expensive, even when the actual room is there. We have received funding and support for most of it, but we still lack funds for a stage floor that can cover the concrete floor that is on Kloden Pilot now. That's why we're asking for your help, and a small contribution. Would you like to join us and splice on stage floors? Make your contribution here: spleis.no/klodengulv
