Deise Nunes: We need to highlight and develop the diversity that exists

May 20, 2019

The festival Kloden i sentrum is approaching, and we talked to the artistic council about their vision for Kloden.

Deise Faria Nunes works as an artistic project developer, dramaturge and writer. She is a theater scholar and artistic director of the company Golden Mirrors Arts Norway. Nunes has been associated with Nordic Black Theatre, and is the founder of ACTS laboratory for performance practices. Nunes has extensive experience from professional committees and as a council member for, among others, Arts Council Norway and the Norwegian Children's Book Institute.

What do you think about Kloden and what the theater will become?

I really like Kloden's ambitions to highlight the diversity that exists, both culturally/ethnically and artistically. Kloden has a great potential to develop artists across all forms of expression. I am particularly interested in what I call the Global South. The Global South is not just a geographical designation, but says something about the social, political and economic opportunities for participation. I want to make this group visible and show opportunities to participate, both as an artist and as an audience. I hope Kloden will play an important role in this.

Have you had a meeting that has affected your own opportunities?

I myself had a strong encounter with avant-garde theater and Odin teatret in particular, where they focus on the physical, visual, musical and not the textual. Odin teatret builds its own expression with the performer as the main force. They have a generosity and share knowledge freely. They don't demand anything other than that you work hard and continuously. That has influenced me.

What are you looking forward to about being on Kloden's artistic council?

Kloden's goals and the composition of its board and artistic council are very inspiring. To my knowledge, it is one of the few theater institutions in Norway that has such a multicultural composition. The fundamental desire and vision that diversity supports quality is right, it's binding, and I think that's very good. Being on the artistic council obliges us to be out there, to see more, to be in contact with the field. It's an opportunity to actively highlight and develop the diversity that exists.
