Bollywood drive-in cinema with the classic Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

September 4, 2025

INTERVIEW: Director of Bollywood Festival Norway, Nasrullah Qureshi, talks about the film you will experience during this year's drive-in cinema.

Kloden theater, TrAP, Oxer Eiendom and Bollywood Festival Norway are organizing a drive-in/outdoor cinema in the parking lot outside the tower at Økern with the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai on Saturday, September 13. The film is from 1998, and is one of the most iconic films in Indian film history.

– It is a love story that was a huge success when it came out, and it is still just as popular. The film is about youth, friendship and love. It follows two students who fall in love, get married and have a daughter, before the mother dies shortly after giving birth. Before she dies, she manages to write letters to her daughter, one for each year to come. When the daughter turns eight, she receives a letter from her deceased mother telling her to help her father find an old friend from her student days. Whether they find each other or not, you will have to watch the film to find out, says Nasrullah.

He highlights the film's timeless theme:

– Kuch Kuch Hota Hai reminds us of the value of love. In a digital age where many people get lost in social media, we need stories that put emotions at the center.

A true Bollywood classic

Starring Shah Rukh Khan, one of India's biggest film stars, the film has gained an almost mythical status.

"Some people have seen it a hundred times. It combines drama, comedy and love. It's simply a complete Bollywood experience," says Nasrullah.

He believes that the fact that the film still arouses interest 26 years after its premiere speaks volumes.

– The owners of the film still make a good profit from it, and therefore it required a high license fee for us to show it. Nevertheless, we show it for free. It is important to us to share this classic with the audience.

Free drive-in experience at Økern

Bollywood Drive-in will also receive a technical upgrade from last year. In addition, free parking will be offered.
– We have put in place a great screen and very good sound, says Nasrullah, adding:

– It's not every day you can experience a Bollywood movie at a drive-in.

For Nasrullah, it's easy to explain why Kuch Kuch Hota Hai still holds strong in his heart.

"It's a unique story of love, and the film is so entertaining that you won't want to stop watching it. You just have to watch it until the end," he says.
