Ruffen and the Flying Dutchman by Tor Åge Bringsværd

Organizer: Brageteatret

Far out in the ocean lies a mysterious island. It is only visible on Tuesdays and Fridays, and in an old castle on this island live the little sea serpent Ruffen and his family. Uncle Ludvik tells fairy tales, and Ruffen likes to hear about The Last Port best of all. It's a town with accordion music and roses, and this is where all the sailors who are lost at sea come. Here they sit on the pier and spit in the sea, and they are all friends.

One evening a storm is brewing, the wind is growling and hissing and suddenly a strange sailing ship comes into view. "It's a ghost ship" says Uncle Ludvik, "It's the Flying Dutchman". As quickly as it came, the ship disappears again, and Uncle Ludvik doesn't want to talk about it any more. None of the adults will tell Ruffen about the Flying Dutchman, but Grandma says that the ship is a harbinger of death and misfortune, and that the captain is doomed to sail forever, without rest, without coming to port.

All night Ruffen thinks about the lonely captain, who must always be alone, and the next morning he packs food and drink in his bag and heads out to sea to find out how it all fits together. Maybe he'll find the Flying Dutchman, and maybe he can help get the ship to the Last Port.

Do you have a teddy bear to spare?

Every year, families and unaccompanied children arrive at transit reception centers in Norway. Many of them have little or nothing with them.
Ruffen gives her Pia doll to the Dutchman to make him feel less lonely. Brageteatret has been inspired by the little sea serpent, and invites the audience to donate teddy bears.

If you have a teddy bear to spare, help give someone a safe best friend on the road ahead. At each venue we visit, we collect teddy bears, and these will be given to children in need in transit centers.

So, do you have a teddy bear that could be the best friend of someone who feels lonely? Bring it to the performance Ruffen and the Flying Dutchman!
