Kloden teater on the driver collection

On September 18, we will take part in a driver gathering at Vollebekk fabriker, where we will present Kloden with two issues, which will then be discussed in a workshop with several other drivers with different backgrounds and expertise. The goal of the gathering is for the projects to go home with concrete action points for further work and for the participants to experience an exciting meeting place that will provide inspiration and networking. Kloden is one of two projects that will be discussed on this day. Read more about the gathering here.

Pådriv is an open and equal partnership working for a more sustainable development of Hovinbyen in Oslo. You can read more about Pådriv here.

BACKGROUND

Kloden is Norway's newest theater, and will be the place for performing arts and young people. Kloden is scheduled to open in Kabelgata in Økern in the fall of 2019, and will gradually expand into a performing arts house until completion in 2022-2023. Kloden will be a programming theater that shows the best in theater and dance for children, youth and families all year round. It will be a place where performing artists can develop and produce performances, as well as a professional hub for the performing arts field. Kloden will be part of a national and international touring network.

Kloden AS has NOK 1 million in operating support from the City of Oslo for 2018. An application has been made for a government grant from 2019. The City of Oslo has signaled a gradual escalation of the operating subsidy, but does not provide guarantees of any kind. We are now preparing a detailed business plan that will show expected investment expenses and at the same time provide the best possible picture of Kloden's finances at full operation.

We have received an indicative rental offer from Oxer Eiendom, which owns the relevant premises at Kabelgata 19 and wishes to carry out the conversion. It is important for us to cover as much of the investment costs as possible in order to reduce future rental costs, so that a larger part of the operating budget can be spent on artistic and professional activities. The business plan will make it easier to approach foundations and other potential supporters who may be able to contribute to the investment costs.

Kloden will be a national stage with an international profile, but we are keen to develop Kloden in a way that makes it as meaningful as possible for the population of Hovinbyen/Groruddalen, an area that does not yet have a national cultural institution. We are in the process of mapping and starting a dialog with the social and cultural infrastructure in the area. Through good collaborations, we want to create a place that contributes as much as possible to cultural and social sustainability. Both in the artistic programming, through collaborative projects and low ticket prices, Kloden will contribute to an urban development that reflects Oslo's cultural richness and where there is room for everyone.

Kloden has low expected income from ticket sales and other sales as well as rental of premises, which must have a rental price on a par with similar premises elsewhere in the city. Ticket prices must be at a level that does not exclude low-income families.

In order for Kloden to become a cultural and artistic meeting place that means a lot to the city, the performing arts field and not least the surrounding area, it is crucial to ensure a sustainable economy. Networking and good collaborations are fundamental to the development of Kloden, and we believe that financial sustainability in this context must be about how Kloden and partners in Hovinbyen can strengthen each other.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

1. How can we rethink private funding of a cultural institution?
2. How can Kloden and other stakeholders in Hovinbyen collaborate with the aim of mutually strengthening the economy?
