A strong, important and heart-warming performance.

As a Tiger in The Jungle is a unique blend of Asian and European performance tradition, circus and music. Original music composed by Per Zanussi.

In As a Tiger in the Jungle, you meet Aman and Ren from Nepal. They were sold by human traffickers and grew up as child slaves in Indian circuses, but were freed by an aid organization and sent to an orphanage. Here they were taken care of and could prepare for an independent and adult life in freedom.

Since 2002, over 700 children have been found and rescued from these circuses, but it is still believed that between 1000 and 2000 children are kept in forced labor in traditional Indian circuses. Although the show focuses on the fate of Aman and Renu, it also highlights human trafficking of children in general. Save the Children estimates that human traffickers are responsible for the disappearance of over 1 million children every year in the world. Unfortunately, Norway is also a tiny part of this horrific statistic.

In 2013, Ali Williams, Producer of British NoFit State Circus, spent a year as project manager in the creation of Circus Kathmandu. Circus Kathmandu was a group of 13 young men and women who had all been rescued from Indian circuses, including our performers, Renu and Aman. They decided to pursue the only knowledge they had after a harsh and tragic upbringing as circus slaves.

Sverre Waage was invited to come to Kathmandu to meet the newly formed circus company. It was the start of a collaboration aimed at building bridges between the developing circus community in Kathmandu and the international community of performing arts producers and programmers in Norway, the UK and Europe.

Press:

Skilled and darkly shining fantasy of recovery, reclamation and stolen childhoods. Grittily beautiful, sad and brave. As a Tiger in The Jungle is a production that shines with an inner fire. Katharine Kavanagh, The Circus Diaries, UK

As a Tiger in The Jungle is likely to have an unforgettable life-long profound effect on you. Theatre Reviews, UK

There are certain performances that resonate and some that need time to process. As A Tiger in The Jungle does both. It's a beautiful piece, so clear and honest from the outset. I think it's the most moving circus performance I've ever seen and certainly the most important - Bloody marvellous. Bloody great. Gareth Clark, Mr. & Mrs Clark Theatre Company, UK
